A Mark Lifted Out of Its Setting

The Nutrient Was Never the Whole Story — and the Supplement Aisle Depends on You Not Noticing

Diets rich in certain foods do track with better outcomes. The reasoning that follows — find the active compound, put it in a capsule, get the same result — has been tested many times. It fails more often than it works, and once it went badly wrong.

Our Coordinates

A landmark is a fix because of everything around it. Lift it out and it stops being one. These three keep that in view.

Food and Supplement Are Named Separately

Evidence about eating a food and evidence about swallowing a compound extracted from it are two different bodies of research, and we never let one stand in for the other. Where an association was observed for a diet, we say diet. The substitution is the whole trick.

The Route Ends With Your Clinician

None of this is a diet plan, and there are no targets, quantities, or schedules anywhere on this site. What you should eat, and whether any supplement belongs in your regimen, is a conversation for a physician or a registered dietitian who knows your history.

We Report the Reversals

On more than one occasion an isolated nutrient has performed worse than placebo in a large trial. Those results are the most informative in the field and the least reproduced, so they get full space here. We sell no supplement, hold no affiliate arrangement, and publish no testimonials.

Nothing here tells you to stop taking anything. If a clinician has prescribed or recommended a supplement — to correct a documented deficiency, for instance — that is a specific decision about you, and general findings about the general population do not override it. Nor is this a reason to change how you eat on the strength of a web page. Both conversations belong with someone who knows your history.

Health Notice: Everything on this site is general educational reading about published research. It diagnoses nothing, recommends nothing, and stands in for no examination by a qualified physician. A supplement is not a replacement for eating well and it is not clinical care. Before you alter your diet, begin or discontinue any supplement, or act on a single sentence published here, raise it with your doctor — and do so without fail if you take prescription medication or live with an existing condition.
